Custard apples, also known as chermoyasCustard apple is a sweet fruit, which is widely grown across the world. In India it is commonly known as ‘seethaphal’. It is being native to tropical America and West Indies; it is widely available in winter season and is sold in local markets of India. One can easily recognise the fruit with first look. Sugar-apple is high in energy, and an excellent source of vitamin-c and manganese, a good source of thiamine and vitamin-b6. Custard apples are also loaded with copper. Copper is a trace mineral that can help the body to form haemoglobin and it also have lots of dietary fibre, which is good for keeping the enzymatic tract healthy and aids digestion too, prevents constipation. Although the fruit is sweet, it has anti-diabetic activity, and anti-obese activity. Custard apples have lower levels of fats, which is great for health. It is also believed that a paste created using the creams flesh from the fruit can be used as a balm to deal with boils, abscesses and ulcers. In olden days, these sugar-fruit are sun-dried and then ground into a powder, which could treat dysentery and diarrhoea. It also behaves as coolants, stimulants and expectorants. And it has greater importance to treat anaemia.

         Not only fruit, even the bark from custard apple tree contains astringents and tannins which are used in making herbal medicines. The leaves from the tree are supposed to be good for the treatment of cancer and tumours; and bark can also relieve tooth aches and gum pains. It also has vitamin-b6 in abundant. The magnesium which is present in this fruit plays a vital role in relaxing muscles and protecting heart against diseases and it is a nature’s tranquilizer which is used to treat tension or anxiety. Shape of the fruit may be symmetrically heart-shaped, lop soiled or irregular, it may be nearly round or oblate with a deep or depression at the base. The flavour of the fruit is sweet and agreeable. The ripen fruit on the tree has high quality nutritional value. Finally, it is considered as “aristocrat of fruits” with a green bumps skin while inside a treat unlike any other you have ever tasted with a high nutrional value.
